After spending two months trying to apply the principles of the book I previously read, I thought it was time to delve into a fiction text. If you’re not a fiction fan, look away now.
This Might Be Right Up Your Alley
One in a Million by Lindsey Kelk falls into the romantic comedy genre. However, in typical Lindsey Kelk style, there’s more comedy than romance. Lindsey Kelk includes a mixture of comical one-liners and typical British humour which starts as early as the opening pages of the book. In true comedic fashion, she begins the story with an event involving the protagonist that can only be described as catastrophically embarrassing, yet to anyone who has got a sense of humour like mine, completely hilarious.
The event that occurs provides a perfect setup to introduce the main characters to the reader and helps the reader identify with the protagonist Annie Higgins.
As the storyline unfolds, we find out that Annie and her business partner (and best friend) Miranda have got their own social media business. Unfortunately, the business is not doing well financially.
Challenge Accepted
After getting a reality check from their bank manager, Miranda and Annie get enveloped into a challenge: a challenge to make a random person famous… on Instagram. If Annie and Miranda win the challenge, they would not have to pay rent for their office space for a whole month, giving them room to breathe during their financial troubles. This is a challenge they can’t pass up.
The narrative follows Annie as she attempts to show off her social media prowess while navigating her romantic endeavours which is not as straightforward as it originally seems.
In the book, Lindsey Kelk explores the question, what happens when you cross a workaholic who is extremely competitive with a challenge that could benefit her business? The juxtaposition in the book of the commitment to running a business with the fakeness that often comes along with being on social media is excellent.
Where Intricacy Comes to Play
Unlike some books written these days where all of the characters but the protagonists are flat, Lindsey Kelk creates a whole world where the characters’ lives intertwine, enabling the reader to jump into the book’s world instead of just following one character around.
Exhale
Unlike the previous books I have reviewed, there are no huge life lessons to be learned here. However, it’s a welcomed break from self-development and instead is a moment to pause and have a laugh. If you are someone who is looking to read something light-hearted or someone who enjoys the nuances of British humour, this book is definitely for you. Happy reading.
