I was planning on writing a review about a book I had started reading a while ago. The book in question revolves around the topic of efficiency. But I guess I’ll share a review of that book another time, as I had an interruption to my normal schedule.
Recently, I went on holiday and had packed a book to read while I was away. The book is called Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire. It’s written by a well-known author and rapper called Akala. Starting a book on holiday doesn’t always mean it will get finished, but this book does not fall into that category. Not only did I read the book when I was away, I was still drawn to the book when I returned.
As a result of reading this book, I nearly missed two train stops on two different occasions and was nearly late for a meeting. As much as reading is a passion of mine, rarely does a non-fiction book grab my attention in the way this book did.
The book touches upon the topics of Britain and its connection to race, identity, and colonisation. Many people ask the question, why are we still talking about topics like slavery and colonisation? Akala’s book answers that exact question.
The book is also fascinating because Akala’s writing style gives the reader an insight into his personality. His writing style is unique and includes a mixture of intricate vocabulary and slang. It’s a breath of fresh air for the people who are constantly code-switching.
Even though historical texts are not for everyone, the way in which the book is written helps a wider audience access history and enjoy reading about it as well. This is because Akala includes not only facts but also biographical information about his life that links to the topic. His writing style gives the book a narrational feel.
If you like history, this book is for you. If you want to know more about Britain and its connection to race, identity and colonisation, this book is for you. If you want to read a historical book which has been written for a wider audience, this book is for you. There’s something in this book for everyone, and I encourage you to allow it to interrupt your normal schedule.
